Do you know when Earth Day started? The idea for a national day to focus on the environment came after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara. Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, announced a "national teach-in on the environment". April 22, 1970 was the first Earth Day. This date was chosen because it fell between spring break and final exams for most colleges and schools at that time.
