Learning CIVICS via Newsela...

Posted by Lori Blantz on Jan 14, 2021 8:13:03 AM

Another program that is available at IU13 is Newsela.  Below is a message from our Newsela rep:

"As we process the events occurring in the last week, the integration of social and emotional learning and Social Studies has been brought to the fore. I am sending this as a reminder for your teachers that all PA educators have FREE access to the Pennsylvania Department of Education Act 35 Middle School Civics units. Newsela collaborated with Sally Flaherty to align differentiated, current news articles, primary resources and teacher supports in service to engaging and relevant discussions. More than 5,000 PA educators across every grade band have already taken advantage of these materials. "

Included below is an outline of the Civics Act 35 content

Principles and Documents

Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship

How Government Works

How International Relationships Function

Cornerstone Activity

Below is a short video that walks you through accessing the FREE materials:

Blog Contest :

Why let the awesome lessons you just used or observed go to waste? For this year's contest, we are asking you to share lesson photos, and the lesson you used along with any lesson support materials with us using this Google Form!

Those who share a photo along with the lesson plan will be entered in our monthly drawing for a chance to win a lesson with Giovanna. Together you will plan a lesson for your students focusing on the content of your choice.

“THANK YOU!” for all you do for our students at IU13.👍
