Are you and your students dragging...Need something engaging to do before the holiday?

Posted by Lori Blantz on Dec 10, 2019 4:19:36 PM

With there only being 8 more days until the holiday break I wanted to share some STEM activities that you can do with materials in your classroom. If you don't have materials listed check in with Giovanna Chamberlain, Hillary Holler, or myself to see if we have them in our maker space inventory.

For the older students: I have included 8 STEM challenge cards to try out. As a teacher, this is your opportunity to make use of some of that small “junk” lying around that doesn’t seem to have a purpose! You might always include the following in EACH mystery STEM bag so that the designers have a good starting point:
*Length of twine/yarn/string (usually about 24″)
*Cup or water bottle – something that can be a holder
*Piece of paper, napkin, tissue paper, etc.
*Metal piece of wire, paperclip, or binder clip (multiples are ok)
*Rubber band(s)
*Craft sticks or popsicle sticks (usually about 10)

For younger students, try out this link with engaging STEM Challenges: There is a list of possible materials to use as well.

If you try any of these out, please send me a picture or two and what you did. I would love to share out. Happy STEM Lessons!!

Finally, I hope everyone saw my earlier blog regarding Hour of Code. Did you put in 1 hour of Coding with one of the programs we shared in my last blog? I would love to see pictures of your students in action with lessons you tried out. You still have time, three days are left! Please check out my contest on the right hand side- still 2 days left to get those Essays to me for voting on Friday!! Good Luck.

My next item to win is Little Genius Starter kit from OSMO. This kit came out in the last 6 months and is a fabulous learning tool. This is a kit that is used with an iPad and 4 free OSMO apps. It allows students to have a hands-on learning adventure. By using this tool students will spark their imagination, and use critical thinking skills. This kit focuses on building letters using manipulatives instead of pencils, answering comprehension questions to problems the OSMO characters face, and follow directions to create pictures of whatever is told to them. Here is a link to see it in action. To enter the contest you need to write a short 100 word or less essay explaining how you could use the tool in the classroom. Essays are due to Lori Blantz by December 12th. Essays will be read and voted on by our ESCES Supervisors on December 13th. Winners will be notified by December 17th. Good Luck!  Please have the essays sent to lori_blantz@iu13.org 👍
