Student Spotlight: Mirta Sanchez

Posted by Anne Weiss on May 29, 2020 10:16:32 AM

Mirta Sanchez joined High School Equivalency (HSE) classes at PA CareerLink in January. Despite health issues contributing to chronic pain, Mirta was a dedicated student and generous classmate, regularly bringing treats for all and giving words of encouragement. Mirta was also the class photographer, as evidenced on our Facebook!

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, Mirta has taken a break from class to focus on volunteering--packaging food at a food bank and endlessly sewing masks--with fabric generously donated by Nimble Thimble--for medical staff, police officers, truck drivers, nursing home residents, people experiencing homelessness and more. She wrote in a text, “My heart is in this. I truly want to help; I can’t sit at home and do nothing.”

Knowing Mirta cares so much about her education, her student advisor was not surprised to read the next part of the text, “I’m not trying to put my school to the side. I’m not quitting. I’m not giving up.”

We thank Mirta for her community involvement and look forward to seeing her someday soon in online classes or back in the classroom when we reopen.
