Safety Solutions

Summer break is a good time for school administrators to take the opportunity to think about the upcoming school year and what their school priorities need to be.  Hopefully while considering staffing, curriculum, learning objectives and all the things that make a school successful they will also take a few minutes to think about school safety.  

For many families conversation around the breakfast table this past Sunday took a much different twist than usual when the TV was turned on or when Dad looked at breaking news on his phone.  50 people dead, 53 others injured.  How do we even talk about these types of events with our kids and loved ones?

So you are an educator and you have been looking forward to summer for sometime now.  You can see the finish line...you are almost there.  A few more weeks with the kids, clean up your room, finalize the grades and head for the beach.

Before we know it another school year will be finished and summer will begin.  School children love this time of year as they get to sleep in, swim, go to camp or just relax at home.

Your school is located in the middle of a dry dessert.  You haven't had a significant rain in years. Yet due to public outcry your school administrator has just  purchased life jackets for every staff and student member and like a cruise ship mounted life boats along the edge of the schools roof for all to board when the school is flooded and swept away.  Might this be a little crazy?  Yes.  But aren't we actually doing something very similar to that in how we often spend our school safety and security dollars?
