Checking it off the list...

Nobody likes to admit it, but sometimes we really want to accomplish a project just so we can “check it off the list”. With so many special projects, mandated reports and a constantly full inbox the idea of getting a project done and checked off is very appealing. However, as we know, there is an inherent danger to that idea that we all recognize. When it comes to All Hazards Planning this danger actually becomes a REAL DANGER!

Recently I have been responding to a series of emails about a new program in Pennsylvania that allows schools to attend a multi-day workshop and at the end of the workshop they will be equipped to complete their own all hazards plan and offer training on it. While this program has the best of intentions I think it is a little naïve to think that you can learn all you need to know in order to complete an all hazards plan that will actually meet your organizations needs in two days. If it were that simple… we would have figured it out long ago. The reality is organizations need someone to help them access their current plans, bring them up to school code requirements and show them what they don’t know. The stuff they do know is easy. It’s what they don’t know that they have to worry about. That is where folks like me come in. We can review their work, help refine it and identify areas that were not previously on their radar. It is the time spent walking the property and comparing what we see to what their plan says that is so valuable. There is no substitute for having an expert on the ground working with a school. It cannot be learned in a workshop. It is our expertise. It is our years of experience. It is our dedication to study of all hazards planning and bring the best practices available to the table.

When it comes to all hazards planning please just don’t “check it off the list”. This is important work. If you would like to learn more, we can help you develop a meaningful, realistic and functional all hazards plan. Give us a call. This is John Baker for safetysolutions4schools.com
