Transgender issues and safety &security services. You make think this is an odd match but actually those working in the field of school safety and security must take transgender issues seriously. The reality is our world is evolving and as it does security professionals must adjust with it and exercise extraordinary understanding and kindness as the public conversation about this issue continues.
Here are two transgender security issues to consider for your school or organization:
- Staff, students or visitors to your facilities that are associated with transgender issues deserve our support. As security professionals we are asked to work toward providing a positive and secure environment for everyone. This is applicable even when we may disagree with another’s point of view. We need to be vigilant and attentive to bullying, harassment, hate speech or threats made toward people who may appear to be different that the rest of the crowd. It is in these moments that professionalism is truly defined.
- Security professionals need to stay current and up to date. Organizations, government agencies and the judiciary continue to clarify how transgender issues will impact our public/common spaces. Security Professionals need to ensure people on both sides of this issue receive the protections afforded them. As professionals we are committed to making sure everyone's rights are honored.
Security professionals are not new to finding themselves in the middle of socially sensitive situations. It is what we do. What is most important is that these issues are handled with incredible sensitivity, understanding and clarity so that all people that enjoy the facilities we protect can do so to the fullest.
