Want to grab your staff and students attention when talking about safety and security issues at school? Well I have a simple solution… stop talking just about school! Change the conversation to “life skills” not just “school skills” and you will find a fresh new interest.
The reality is most of the strategies we use at school to respond to a hazard are the same strategies someone would use at home. By making that connection we are no longer just talking about just a school skill we are now sharing important information with our staff and students that can keep them safe no matter where they go. The fact is our staff and students spend far more time outside the four walls of our school then they do in them and because of that life skills appear more relevant to their everyday lives.
So next time you are tasked with teaching a safety or security strategy look for the life skill application first and bring it back to the school application second. I bet you find a much more attentive audience.
