Sexual assault is one of those topics that makes us uncomfortable. Even for adults this topic is difficult to discuss. Can you image what is must be like to be a child and have to discuss something as horrific as being sexually assaulted? But educators and others who are involved in young people’s lives know that these conversations must be had…even when they are difficult.

Recently, IU13 wanted to explore what a sexual assault might look like through the eyes of a high school girl who was raped. We decided to produce a dramatization video that looked at sexual assault through the eyes of a student--as a way of initiating a dialogue between young people, parents, school staff, and law enforcement. This video is intended for middle and high school students, as well as school staff and parents. The story is told in a reflective style as the victim is guided through the process of first reporting her assault to a teacher and finally ending in a courtroom, as her assailant is found guilty. It is a powerful story. But even more importantly it will hopefully create an opportunity to begin an open dialogue about sexual assault within our schools.

This video presents a positive message--that while horrible things occur, such as sexual assault, if you are willing to let others help there is a path to restoration and recovery.

This video also brings to light how friends, family, and supporters of a sexual assault victim can be heroes in a victim’s life and be an advocate for them, even when all they want to do is curl up in a ball and forget their nightmare.
