People who have the opportunity to do something other than fall to the floor when violence starts statistically have a greater chance of surviving the assault. That fact is undeniable.
We are collectively shocked by these random acts of violence that have resulted in mass casualties over the past few weeks. It appears it is part of a global trend in terrorism and violence against innocent citizens that has been escalating for several years now. While politicians and the law enforcement community struggle to find a solution (gun control, increased intelligence activity, better coordination, profiling) the simple reality is the average citizen needs to understand what options they have when evil strikes. Whether in school, work or the mall when violence begins we need to consider three basic options.
- Escape- Get out the of area as quickly as possible and seek a safe location until help arrives
- Enhance- your current location. It is not safe to move so how can you create a safe place right where you are until help arrives?
- Engage- when evil is standing in front of you what can you do to create a distraction and provide the opportunity to get to safety?
These three strategies are universally recognized as "run, hide, fight" and are recommended by virtually every legitimate and knowledgable expert in the field of personal protection.
Share them with your loved ones, evaluate your own resources and capabilities and stay safe!
