While there are many definitions of terror or terrorism used by government agencies across the globe there is one common thread… “causing people to fear living their daily lives”. Clearly there are times to fear acts of violence however statistically threats of violence simply don't come to fruition. The reality is EVIL DOES NOT CALL AHEAD…IT JUST SHOWS UP. This fact was reinforced when I received a recent FBI_bulletin that reinforces that very fact. If you want to read the bulletin simply click on the embedded link above.
There is no doubt that anonymous threats to our schools cause many administrators and parents to pause there simply is no basis in fact to generally interrupt the normal schedule of the school. Sure there is a need to increase awareness and take reasonable additional security measures but there in typically no need to close, delay or dismiss a school early because of an anonymous threat.
Michael Dorn, a noted international expert on school safety, observed how the nation of Israel handles threats and acts of terrorism while being trained by some of their elite counter terrorism forces. Dorn shared that Israel made a decision a long time ago to NOT let terrorism interrupt their lives. Even when an actual terrorist event occurs they conduct their investigation, clean up the scene and restore the area to normal as quickly as possible; often within hours of the occurrences. This return to normalcy bolsters their citizens to move forward living their lives as fully as possible and not allowing fear to dominate them. We could learn a few things from our friends in Israel.
