There are a lot of good reasons to evacuate a building besides just fires. So why is it that we call them fire drills? After all there hasn't been a fire related death in schools since 1958 in the United States. The reality is we face all types of hazards that may cause us to flee a school or other building..so why don't we think about other scenarios besides just fires and train on those as well?
Here are just a few...
- hazardous materials spill
- structural failure
- violent intruder
- water line break
- natural gas leak or utility issue
- crime scene processing
- power outage
With all these others reasons besides fire we should really stop calling these drills FIRE drills and simply call them evacuation drills. In our schools we should present different scenarios each month before conducting the evacuation drill and condition our staff and students to consider evacuation for other hazards like we listed above. I produced a 5 minute informational video the other month for our staff and you are more than welcome to share it with your folks.
