The Refugee Center and Community School
November Recap
Women and Girls’ Empowerment Banquet
On November 16th, nearly 50 people attended the Women and Girls' Empowerment Banquet at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, hosted by Refugee Center and Community School at Reynolds. Attendees included students from schools across the district, along with their mothers and sisters. The event began with a panel of powerful women, Tunza Salum and Elaine Moreno-Hernandez, who demonstrated the strength of single mothers in adverse conditions. Attendees then ate a delicious dinner and listened to guest speakers, Katie Surra (Thaddeus Stevens College) and Fran Rodriguez (Lancaster County Community Foundation). Finally, everyone wrote down what they loved about themselves and what their goals were for the future. They were then invited to share their dreams with the crowd and the majority decided to participate, in exchange for the lovely reward of a book. It was a highly inspirational and motivational evening.
Northbay Adventure Camp
Our 6th grade students had the opportunity to spend a week in Maryland at NorthBay Adventure Camp. Students got out of their comfort zone and tried high ropes courses, zip lined, and explored nature.
